Alcohol and drug addiction, head trauma, stroke, memory loss, mood disorders, and many psychiatric problems are marked by damage, poor metabolism, reduced activity, and other abnormalities in specific areas of the brain. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a unique treatment that provides profound benefits for the brain that cannot be achieved by any other treatment.
When you breathe 100 percent oxygen under pressure—the essence of HBOT—oxygen dissolves in the plasma and other fluids. This increases oxygen availability 100-fold, making it easily accessible to all tissues in the body, including regions of the brain with poor blood flow. HBOT’s massive infusion of oxygen “wakes up” dysfunctional neurons. It also facilitates new blood vessel growth, mobilizes the body’s regenerative stem cells, and boosts the production of other growth factors necessary for enduring brain recovery and repair.
Thousands of clinical studies have demonstrated HBOT’s benefits. Particularly revealing are before-and-after SPECT scans of the brain. You don’t have to be an expert to see the differences. As the brain heals and metabolic activity returns, previously dark areas with little blood flow or neurological activity literally light up.
During a typical treatment, you sit or recline in a special chamber and breathe 100 percent oxygen through a mask while pressure is slowly increased up to three times that of the normal atmosphere. For 45 minutes to an hour, you simply relax, read, watch a movie, or listen to music. The pressure is then slowly returned to normal. Sessions may be repeated, depending on the condition, anywhere from five to 40 times.
