Anxiety is a normal reaction to threatening situations. Tension, heightened awareness, nervousness, and other signs of anxiety are part of the stress response, the hormone-driven call to action to get the body ready to fight or flee. Under normal circumstances, anxiety subsides as soon as the situation is under control.
Some people, however, are hyper-reactive to any perceived threat, real or imagined, and the brain and body remain on alert long after the threat has passed. This is chronic anxiety, and it is associated with a number of unpleasant symptoms and increased susceptibility to a wide variety of illnesses.
People who suffer with chronic anxiety usually realize their reaction is more intense than a situation warrants, but they can’t seem to shake the constant worries and feelings of dread. If they seek professional help, they are often prescribed benzodiazepines, antidepressants, and other mind-altering drugs that have a host of negative side effects.
Chronic anxiety is emotionally and physically debilitating, and nobody should have to live in a state of constant fear and worry. But drugs are not the answer. Therapeutic lifestyle changes, targeted IV and oral nutrients, and therapies such as neurofeedback, acupuncture, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy have helped many of our patients at Whitaker Wellness deal with anxiety and dramatically improve their quality of life.
